Main Task

Introduction

our brief is to create a professional local radio news broadcast. From my research I found out that hourly radio news broadcasts contain:

• Title music
• At least one presenter
• At least two specialist reporters 
• At least two outside broadcasts 
• An interview
• A VOX pop 
• SFX (sound effects)
• To be organised in an orderly manner  

this section of the blog will consist of me and three of my colleagues to come together to complete a professional sounding hourly news broadcast. To ensure we were doing it right we done some research and planning into what a professional broadcast sounds like from the BBC. according to my research i've concluded that a broadcast tends to last 5 minutes and contains 7-8 headlines with much more. 

Article 1

The first step towards completing the main task was to create our first news item that would be published on our radio broadcast. the first article is based on the first ever Kilburn Literary Festival. In our group of 4 we split ourselves into roles of being a Presenter, Interviewer, Interviewee, and added a SFX to make the radio news report more realistic to the audience. The Kilburn Literary Festival was running on Thursday 30th October until Tuesday 4th November, the festival was running workshops, author events, writing competitions, quizzes and much more.

We used the website freesfx.co.uk which was a website that had free sound effects that were free of use and not copyrighted. This was useful to use in Audacity to edit our radio report on the Kilburn Literary Festival because we needed ambiance of an outside environment. we incorporated it when the outside reporter was reporting.

Article 2

The Second article will be using in our news broadcast is based on a recent missing person within the Westminster borough. we found this article on a news website site "getwestlondon" website. Which gives news based on the west London area. this news item will come towards the end of the broadcast because its not as important, but it still relevant. the timelessness of the article makes it news worthy.

This is our audacity editing of the presenter sharing his insight on the missing French teenager known as Tania Georgeat that has not been in contact with her family since 16th October. The presenter shares his 36 second insight report on one of the most recent missing teenagers known as Tania Georgeat, Also the missing teenager is one of the 54 people that have been reported missing within the west end since 2013 and countless more went unreported.

We recorded this on two tracks because there was a hiccup on the first and then edited the rest to make it fit in smoothly and run with ease making it sound like one fluid recording.

This is the final version of the missing French teenager local radio news on the west London area.

Presenter	54 people have been reported missing within the west end since 2013 and countless more went unreported. The most recent was Tania Georgeat, 19 year old from France was reported missing when family hadn’t made contact with her since October the 16TH. She was last seen in Acton on October 24. Tania has a dark European complexion, slim with long brown hair. If you have seen her, or know of her whereabouts, please call the Lambeth police at 0208 649 2113 or 101.

Artical 3

Affordable Housing

This article is about how the mayor of London has decided to deal with the housing crisis in London, by creating £225 million worth of housing. This articles values are impact, timeliness and good news.

Influence by these news values

1.The article has a value of impact because this new scheme is to help the people in London get affordable housing. This also affects the housing market because they are going to have to compete with other housing companies so they will lower the prices making it more affordable in genral over a course of time.
2.This article is timely because this crisis is happening right now and will be here until it has been sorted, cause of how it affects everyone.
3.lastly, this is good news because this means that the citizens of london will now be able to afford to live in housing without worrying with about high bills they have to pay

This article is about how hackers have infiltrated peoples homes, places of work etc. by watching everything from their webcam and streaming it online. This articles news values are impact, bad news and timeliness.

Influence by these news value

1.This story impacts everyone in England or even everyone with webcams, because that is what the story is based around and robbers could use this to choose who to rob.

2.this article is timely since it is happening right now and will continue until the find where their base of operations are.

3.This is bad news because it could affect the public in a negative way with a larger amount of robberies to be happening.

This screenshot shows how the audio tracks were set, it was done with a slight overlap so that they could transition to each other in a smoother format.

There was no script for this article since we went out and asked the publics opinion on the article.

Artical 5

Violent crimes in the capital goes up 22% in the past year

News Value

I have included this news item in my radio broadcast because it includes all of the local news values that have been listed below.

Bad News - this news isn't something that a majority of listeners would want to hear.

Proximity- this news item regards the local area; it includes most boroughs in London and therefore one that most listeners can relate to. Oxford street is the busiest area in London , one of which many listeners pass through  or work on.

Timeleness- this news item is new news and its based on statistics that haven't been heard before.

Human Interest - this news item would come of interest to many as it is new statistics regarding their local area. Also other areas and boroughs are involved in this broadcast and therefore affects more than just one group of people. The news item also has a speaker who is a ember of labour and therefore has authority so her opinion is counted and taken note of by listeners. 

Impact- this local news story has a large impact on the listeners as it talks about many different boroughs including the local area and therefore involves all of the listeners.  Crime is a taboo topic (murder, death etc) one in which not many people want to talk about , it therefore has an impact on the listener because of this. I have chosen to add this news item to my local radio broadcast because the statistics have increased and will have an impact on the listener because they listener wasn't expecting the increase.

  this news item is newsworthy as it includes new statistics that haven't been released before therefore are newsworthy because they will have an impact on the listener.

Conflict- conflict draws in the listener more because not many news items include conflict  and are just based on facts and statistics.  I have included this news item in my radio broadcast because due to the facts and statistics there is a conflict between a met spokesmen who states that there is not really much of an increase and that the statistics have changed because now there is more of an accurate increase; however a member of labour (Joanne McCarthy) disagrees and says "If this had been a dramatic change in recording we would expect to see a one off spike. Instead what we are seeing is a worrying trend developing with overall violent crimes across most categories on the up".

Reporter - There has been an increase in the number of crimes in the past year , the capital has seen a 22% increase and other boroughs such as kensington and chelsea and barnet have seen a 38% increase.  (name of field reporter ) is at one of the capitals busiest sights with a met spokesmen.

Field Reporter -  Are you shocked at the rise of the crimes?

(First Speaker) Met Spokesmen - The increase may shock some citizens but the new figures are more of an accurate recording.  

 Reporter -  however labours Joanne McCartney fired back at the claim. 

(Second Speaker) Joanne McCartney-  If this had been a dramatic change in recording we would expect to see a one off spike. Instead what we are seeing is a worrying trend developing with overall violent crimes across most categories on the up.

Reporter - other boroughs such as Hillingdon and Bromley also saw rises of more than 25% in their violent crime figures too.

Presenter(40 seconds)	A tragic event occurred last night at 10:40 pm.  An 18 year old was stabbed to death by a 16 year old on Salisbury street. the young man was quickly rushed to hospital, but unfortunately he was pronounced dead by the time he arrived. He has yet to be identified so if anyone knows of his identity please step forward and talk to the metropolitan police.  Police have also asked for several youths to step forward due to them being present in the area at the time. If any one has any information regarding the death of this young man please act now and step forward, appeal to the metropolitan police	None.

news value that apply:
Proximity always plays an important role when deciding what stories to publish. the closer the better. If it was 100 miles away it would defeat the purpose of the story being local. only time distance wouldn't play a major role is when its an important case that everyone should be aware of for example to ebola virus traveling to the UK. This will then enable the viewer to be more careful and cautious
It also brings sorrowness into play. people know the streets aren't safe knowing an innocent man was stabbed to death for no real reason. The news station is also doing the met police a favour as the man is still unknown so they hope the news broadcast can have a larger reach to the people in the local area.

Anti Smoking Campaign

Presenter; 40 SECS	Public Health England has launched a hard-hitting campaign to highlight how smoking damages the body. This includes highlighting the multiple impacts that toxic ingredients in cigarettes can have on the body. Professor Kevin Fenton , National Director for Health and wellbeing for public health England added: " Much of the harm caused by smoking doesn't become obvious until middle age but the invisible damage can start shocking early; even by late teens. The earlier a smoker quits the better, but quitting at any age can help reverse at least some of the damage. That's why there is no time better than now to quit. Stop smoking, stop the rot.	None.

Measles school Outbreak

Presenter	An outbreak of measles in schools ‘could spread’ PHE warns. The shocking alert comes after a number of children tested positive for the highly infectious viral illness in London schools. Dr Deborah Turbitt , deputy director for PHE urges that all children and teenagers are fully vaccinated.	None

Fungi in drink

Article 9

Kilburn resident Peter Williams has been told by Michael Fitzpatrick of coca cola London that the fungi floating in his apple juice are perfectly edible. Williams say he noticed multiple pieces of fungi floating at the top of his innocent drink. What he said was. Interviewee: I took it home and was about to open it when I saw some fungi at the top of the bottle. One small one and one big one. Luckily I hadn't open the bottle so it was still factory intact.

notice how we had to remove 1 of the crime news items. We came to a conclusion as a group that there were too many crime story's on our news broadcast. In order to achieve the highest grade possible we're going to remove one and bring a new story that fits a category we haven't presented yet

Audacity Tool 1

the zoom tool was essential in the editing process of creating the radio news bulletin. it allowed us to get close and personal to cut out any unnecessary pauses as seen in the picture.
what this enables us to do is cut out any unnecessary noise or pauses that occur, allowing our news item to flow well.






Audacity Tool 2

The second tool we used was the envelope tool. This allowed us to fade down the volume of a existing audio track which then we were able to speak over it. We used this when we had to mellow out the intro music to introduce the radio station name. This allowed our voice to be clearly projected and heard over the jingle .

The third tool that we learnt during the process of creating our news bulletin was the use of multiple tracks. Using multiple tracks allows us to edit our audio easier and more efficiently during the post-production stage of our work. Having all the audio on one track is too complicated to work efficiently with, whereas having multiple tracks gives us as much freedom as possible to work with our audio.

Audacity Tool 4


The fourth tool used was the amplify tool. this proved vital when composing the vox pop. during the vox pop we noticed that the voices weren't all the same level some voices were too loud and some not as loud. Since some people were further away from the microphone, they were naturally less audible, so we amplified the audio they provided to ensure that the show was broadcast on an equal noise level. The beauty of the amplify tool was that we were able to roughly even them all out to make it sound as professional as possible

The tool highlighted is the time shift tool. What we have done with this tool is used it to shift our pieces of audio to where we wanted it to be. This enables our news item to flow smoothly, organically and be more organized. below shows an example of the time shift tool being used in the creation of our news bulletin. it shows each component being placed in its relevant place

 The Sync-Lock tool was the 7th tool we learnt to use. This useful tool  is a feature that allowed us to force all highlighted tracks to be synchronised as one big group. All tracks that are highlighted after sync-lock has been enabled move together as one

the noise reduction tool is self explanatory. It simply removes any unwanted background noise. This showed it true potential when the presenters tracks were playing because you were able to hear background noise which made it sound unprofessional 

                                                                                 




creating the "sound stab"

We used the software GarageBand to cut this jingle that we choose from over 2000 jingles, by cutting the appropriate selected part of the beginning of the jingle to create a music stab. This music stab we used to add in the beginning of our 5 minute radio in-between each news stories item which was useful in creating an impact of the news stories that the presenter mentions.

CreaTitle music 

When creating our title music we used two loops. To find the right loops we clicked on a variety on tags which minimised the loops that we didn't need.

Below is a screenshot of our complete track title. The yellow line is the fading tool which was used to gradually fade out the loop. 

Below is the completed title music which will be used at the start of our news broadcast; this will be  used to identify are local news broadcast. it is catchy and upbeat which is important to have in our track title as it attracts and engages the target audience.
