Introduction:
Before I can begin to construct my own LOCAL RADIO NEWS broadcast I need to understand this GENRE of media product. To do this I must listen and analyse examples of local radio NEWS broadcasts and IDENTIFY their CODES and CONVENTIONS.
this is the recording of the news on a local radio. I've chosen to record the Leeds local news broadcast.
1) Duration: 20 secs.
Story: Man convicted of double murder in Bradford
Analysis: The proximity and the sorrowfulness make this segment of the news worthy. Any case of death is sad especially when someone decides to take life away.
2) Duration: 31 secs.
Story: police questioning a man on motorway pile up Bradford. a woman died and 60 year old man rushed to leads general infirmary.
Analysis: The proximity is why this made the news. also the fact that people were severely hurt and someone even died. it keeps the local area aware of whats happening around them.
3) Duration: 23 secs.
Story: man convicted of shooting a British business man's wife 4 years ago during their honeymoon. man said the husband hired him to kill her.
Analysis: The bizarreness of this story makes it news worthy. For them to have been married you'd assume that they were in love ,But for someone to try have there lover murdered is strange and odd. Also he only came out 4 years after he done it making it even more odd that he waited so long to make it public.
4) Duration: 44 secs.
Story: politics Lib Dems stay in government after general election they will use 1/2 billion cut back on waiting times to tackle metal health conditions
Analysis: This is known as hard news. The whole country is affected because of political changes if they do stay in government. This will help everyone in the UK, however some people may argue that the money could used for anther serious situation
5) Duration: 52 secs.
Story: Spanish nurse infected with Ebola virus. 1st person outside west Africa to contract it. David Cameron's plans on how to combat the spread in the UK
Analysis: Impact. its an pandemic virus that is slowly spreading across the world. This would have been on news all over the UK. local news station helps keep its residents up to date on other things as well as the ones that happen close to home
6) Duration: 13 secs
Story: Bradford is youngest city in Europe 21.6% population below 15
Analysis: Human interest and it being a record makes it a news worthy story. It's statistically proven that Bradford is the youngest city in Europe. its a fact and a record making it interesting
7) Duration: 14 secs.
Story: new dads army film to be made in Yorkshire
Analysis: impact to fans of the film and its important to people living in Yorkshire cause filming take place, meaning increased tourism

Codes and Conventions
All radio stations have codes and conventions they must follow regardless of the genre of radio. these codes and conventions will apply to all radio news broadcasts. these are:
- Intro music that uses a jingle to introduce the show and inform the listeners that the show is commencing. They tend to use catchy tunes, so the audiences can distinguish that a news broadcast is about to start.
- the presenter of the show will introduce himself at the very start. They do this to show the authenticity of the show and create a connection with the audience
- 2 specialist reports are needed. One for the interview and the other for a vox pop to get a different point of view to the news item.
- outside broadcasts/ Spokes people who specialise in a specific sector
- sound effects (SFX) are used to make it more interesting and it can also make it useful for the listeners to get a better understanding on what the news item is about
- They run for about 5-7 minutes and are aired every hour on the hour
- It finally ends with the presenter informing them of the time and then closig off this is ussally followed with an outro jingle.
I'm going to spend this half of the course researching on the news values that affects what events are presented to us through the media. some examples of the news values are proximity, timeliness, impact, prominence, ETC.
Where do news stories come from?
Journalists can't invent news, they have to find original, valuable news, that is appealing to a particular audience. There are two main methods they can use to getting a good story. one being first hand data where they snoop and pick up on observations trying to find a newsworthy article or through second hand data by asking people. Most news-worthy events are going to be communicated to a journalist through other people because it's unlikely that the journalists are going to be first hand witnesses.
Journalists may seek news stories from:
- local police station,
- fire and rescue department,
- road safety crews, local city council office,
- police work department,
- local government offices, schools,
- universities,
- hospitals,
- non-profit organisation,
- churches, mosques,
- business & trade organisation,
- general public,
- politicians and councillors
- press officers.

RAJAR
RAJAR has been
useful to me when finding out the radio audiences. This shows the quarterly listening of some of the most popular radio channels. It shows the population of each radio channel, the reach and the reach percentage, the average hours per listener and the total hours of listening. This therefore can give you information on the audiences of each local radio news station,
It has enabled me to see the
difference between the audiences (people aged 15+) of local and commercial radio Commercial radio
may consist of conventions that are consumed within local radio but the content
is different. This is why there is a difference between the listeners of local
radio and listeners of commercial radio. The statistics provided by RAJAR show
taht only 16% of local radios are being reached by audiences compared to teh 64%
reach on commercial radios. This may be because of local radio only being
important for that area. This may mean that older people may listen to it to
find out information about what’s going on in the area for day today life. In order
for me to make a thriving local radio broadcast i must take into consideration
of the age of the listeners.

The "Filter Bubble" - Eli Pariser
The filter bubble is set for release May 12, 2011. filter bubble is a result of a personalized search in which a website algorithm selectively guesses what information a user would like to see based on information about the user such as location, previous click behaviour and search history. It shows that you shouldn't rely on big company's such as Google and Facebook to provide news. There are websites such as duckduckgo which is a search engine that shows unbiased results.

the most vital program we plan on using is
Blogger. Blogger allows us to make a blog which all our coursework would be shown. We would explain what we do each stage of the way as we progress through the creation of our own local radio bulletin. Blogger allows the examiner easy access to each and everyone of our blogs which allows him/her to mark it with ease. Since Blogger is owned by Google it is necessary that each member in our production group had a Gmail so we can associate our accounts to blogger and keep in contact
Audacity is another essential program in the production of our news bulletin. Audacity is a free audio editor which we plan on using. despite the simplicity of it, it really packs a punch with effects tab that's gives you access to over 30+ effects
Soundcloud is a online audio distribution platform which will allow us to upload any of our audio tracks that need uploading. Once its uploaded to Soundcloud it will allow us to embed the audio directly into our blogs.
Garage band is an application that allows you to create music/jingles on macs. Garage band will allow us to create our own personalised jingle and intro for a radio broadcast. It has over 1000 different instruments at the disposal of a click.

Crime has risen 22%, Measles outbreak in schools, Girl has gone missing, Hackers watch British families through webcams, more secrets about Cigarettes, New housing to be built for future, and the first ever literary festival in our local area.

Reporter- There has been an increase in the number of crimes in the past year, the capital has seen a 22% increase; other boroughs such as Barnet. Kensington and Chelsea have seen a 38% increase. Andrew Barnes is at one of the capitals busiest sights with a met spokesman.
Field Reporter- Are you shocked at the rise of crimes?
(First Speaker) Met Spokesman- The increase may shock some citizens but the new figures are more of an accurate recording.
Reporter- however labours Joanne McCartney fired back at the claim.
(Second Speaker) Joanne McCartney- If this had been a dramatic change in recording we would expect to see a one off spike. Instead what we are seeing is a worrying trend developing, with overall violent crimes across most categories on the up.
Reporter- other boroughs such as Hillingdon and Bromley also saw rises of more than 25% in their violent crime figures too.

Presenter- An outbreak of measles in schools ‘could spread’ PHE warns. The shocking alert comes after a number of children tested positive for the highly infectious viral illness in London schools. Dr. Deborah Turbitt, deputy director for PHE urges that all children and teenagers are fully vaccinated.
First speaker- We could potentially see further measles cases in wider areas of west London as a result of this outbreak we are asking parents to ensure their children are fully vaccinated with two doses of MMR. We are working with schools involved and NHS England to urgently inform parents of the situation. And to ensure that the risk of measles is minimized.
Presenter- Local GP surgeries have also been alerted to the outbreak.

Presenter- 54 people have been reported missing within the west end since 2013 and countless more went unreported.
The most recent was Tania Georgeat; 19 year old from France was reported missing when family hadn’t made contact with her since October the 16TH. She was last seen in Acton on October 24.
Tania has a dark European complexion, slim with long brown hair. If you have seen her, or know of her whereabouts, please call the Lambeth police at 0208 649 2113 or 101.

Presenter- Public Health England has launched a hard-hitting campaign to highlight how smoking damages the body. This includes highlighting the multiple impacts that toxic ingredients in cigarettes can have on the body. Professor Kevin Fenton, National Director for Health and wellbeing for public health England added: " Much of the harm caused by smoking doesn't become obvious until middle age but the invisible damage can start shocking early; even by late teens. The earlier a smoker quits the better, but quitting at any age can help reverse at least some of the damage. That's why there is no time better than now to quit. Stop smoking, stop the rot.

The mayor of London, Boris Johnson has agreed to spend £225million to Build new housing for England.
£180million is going into building new houses. And £45million is going into Gentoo’s Genie, which is a program that will help people save for a mortgage deposit.
These low cost housing will be ready by 2020.

Presenter-The first-ever Kilburn Literary Festival starts today and runs until 4th November, located in west Hampstead’s very own sheriff Centre. This festival includes a variety of activities for both children and adults. Now over to our field reporter.

Interviewee- This is the first ever-literary festival with talks to aspiring authors on how to publish your books. There is also a competition for both kids and teens. And I hope we can host it next year.

Presenter: While reported crime figures are going down nationally, here in west London the trend is up, crime in Camden has seen a 22% increase over the July to December period. Met Officer Andrew Barnes had this to say
Met officer: I would just like to refute, these ideas that the police are not doing their job based upon the recent statistics that crime has increased, well the reason why the crime has increased is because we have more efficient police doing their job excellently and therefore capturing more criminals. We also have a more efficient procedure of recording criminals therefore crime has increased is a positive thing and not a negative thing because we are now catching more criminals
Presenter: But local councillor Joanne McCartney sees things differently.
Joanne McCartney: If this had been a dramatic change in recording then we would've seen a one off spike.

Kilburn resident Peter Williams has been told by Michael Fitzpatrick of coca cola London that the fungi floating in his apple juice are perfectly edible. Williams say he noticed multiple pieces of fungi floating at the top of his innocent drink. What he said was.
Interviewee: I took it home and was about to open it when I saw some fungi at the top of the bottle. One small one and one big one. Luckily I hadn't open the bottle so it was still factory intact.
